THERAPIST SUPPORT

I had the benefit of many amazing supervisors across my time in training. Perhaps the most important thing I was every told was by my post-doc boss: "Always take the most comfortable chair for yourself."

It's often not in the nature of us helping professionals to prioritize our well-being above others'. But consider our work. Each of us is the tool of our trade. We owe it to ourselves to do what we need to promote personal health as well as sustain our careers.

Supervision, teaching, and training experience

In addition to providing therapy, I have taught at Salem State and Northeastern's counseling programs, and worked as a clinical supervisor and training director in my full-time role at Salem State's counseling center. In working with counselors-in-training, I found that my natural inclination is to take a developmental approach - both lifespan and professional - which honors the different challenges, needs, and processes at each stage. This same framework is a large part of my therapeutic work with counselors.

In addition to a normative, developmental approach, I also recognize that many therapists - myself included - come to the field with their own histories, vulnerabilities, and even diagnoses.

It can be terrifying as a clinician to experience a return of symptoms or a first-time episode. The good news is that we know treatment works. And in addition to working on healing, consultation is available in terms of monitoring burnout and impairment, talking with supervisors and human resources, and ensuring continuity of care for your own clients.

Confidentiality

In our initial consultation, I recommend we discuss shared professional or social circles. I am generally comfortable navigating boundaries in these instances provided I am not in a supervisory/evaluative role or in regular social contact. Your comfort is my primary concern.

I'm also happy to discuss my approach to documentation and my understanding of reporting duties. As with all my clients, if there is a potentially difficult situation we need to discuss I invite you to start the conversation in the broadest terms so that you can remain in control of the disclosure.
